What's New The Cliffs' Sara Beach Wins Top Young Sommelier Regional Competition
Advances to National Competition on May 16 in Santa Barbara, CA.
TRAVELERS REST, S.C. (February 24, 2010) – Sara Beach, certified sommelier and food and beverage manager for The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards in Salem, S.C., won the Châine des Rotisseurs Regional Young Sommelier Competition on Saturday, February 20. After completing a three part exam conducted by a panel of master sommeliers, Beach was awarded the best Young Sommelier in the Southeastern United States distinction and will advance to compete at the national level on May 16 in Santa Barbara, CA.
Beach aced each section of the challenging three-part test, which included a written exam testing the sommelier’s knowledge of various factors, including specific soils and obscure native grape varieties. High-end service was the second assessment, trying the individual on champagne service and decanting of older, vintage wines, along with a wine and menu pairing analysis where recommendations of particular wines and vintages were made. Finally, individuals were challenged with a blind tasting of six wines; relying on the sommelier deductive method to determine the origin (country, region and town), specific grape and vintage of each wine.
A native of South Carolina, Beach holds a B.S. from College of Charleston. Prior to joining The Cliffs, she held previous roles as a fine wine retailer, distributor for a wine boutique and general manager of a wine shop in Charleston, S.C. “I am definitely excited about winning the regional competition and competing in Santa Barbara,” Beach said. “It is also going to be a lot of fun and if you can’t have fun in this process then you are really missing the best part.”
The Châine des Rotisseurs is an international gastronomic society founded in Paris in 1950. It is devoted to promoting fine dining and preserving the camaraderie and pleasures of the table. Today, the society has members in more than 70 countries. In the U.S., there are nearly 150 bailliage (chapters).
