Travel + Leisure Golf Magazine Names The Cliffs No. 5 Among America's Top 100 Places to Live

TRAVELERS REST, S.C. (Jan. 23, 2009) – For the fourth consecutive year, Travel + Leisure Golf magazine has recognized The Cliffs Communities among America’s Top 10 Golf Communities.  Published in its January/February issue which hits newsstands this week, Travel + Leisure Golf moved The Cliffs up to No. 5 from No. 7 in 2008, based on distinctions that include Tiger Woods’ first U.S. course at The Cliffs at High Carolina and The Cliffs Retreat Collection of international destination properties.

Travel + Leisure Golf’s David Gould and Lauren Kim write, “Cliffs-branded properties have innovated for years with their wellness centers, reciprocal amenities and little extras like America’s first Tiger Woods–designed golf course. But golf communities face competition from the ever-growing destination club industry, and The Cliffs’ founder Jim Anthony is virtually alone in pushing back. He’s been collecting far-flung, exotic getaway properties under the banner of The Cliffs Retreat Collection. Should life in The Cliffs’ eight Carolina communities induce ennui, a member can bivouac off to Patagonia, Chile, or British Columbia.”

The list is compiled by Travel + Leisure Golf editors and each property is reviewed in the following six categories, in order of importance: golf amenity; residential architecture and style; location, including natural setting and proximity to cultural activities; management, service and programming options; non-golf amenities, such as a full service spa, equestrian center or marina; and environmental stewardship. A concern for residential asset value, implicit in the previous years’ rankings, is of heightened value in editors’ deliberations for 2009.

The Cliffs celebrated the following milestones in 2008, all of which played a part in community enhancement:

• The Cliffs and Tiger Woods Design unveiled the layout of the first Tiger Woods Design golf course in America at The Cliffs at High Carolina, resulting in sales of over $40 million.
• Gary Player Group’s North American headquarters opened at The Village at The Cliffs at Mountain Park.
• The Cliffs at Keowee Springs golf course, designed by Tom Fazio, opened.
• The 2008 GOLF Magazine Dream House debuted at The Cliffs at Keowee Springs.
• Preserve Health, PA, a team-based family medical practice, opened in The Village at The Cliffs at Mountain Park.
• The Tavern opened in The Cliffs at Walnut Cove’s Club Village.
• The Cliffs pledged property in the Jocassee Gorges and $10 million to build South Carolina’s first Teacher Renewal Center in partnership with Clemson University and the S.C. Department of Education.
• The Showcase Green Home at The Cliffs at Mountain Park – The Cliffs’ first Earthcraft-certified model home – opened.
• The Cliffs Preserve in Patagonia, Chile, opened Beach Club and Spa.
