The Cliffs Valley Provides New Finish Line for USA Cycling Professional Time Trial Championship

GREENVILLE, S.C. (August 8, 2007) – In a move that will allow spectators to enjoy the beautiful scenery at The Cliffs Valley and the athletes to hammer home, the finish line of this year’s USA Cycling Professional Individual Time Trial, presented by The Cliffs, has been moved and placed adjacent to the golf course. The distance of this national championship race, scheduled for Saturday, September 1, has also changed from 20.15 miles (32.4 km) to 18.7 miles (30.1 km).

This adjustment to the Individual Time Trial will situate the finish line, as well as spectator and media amenities, near the scenic Ben Wright-designed Cliffs Valley golf course. The staging area will sit along Terry Creek Road next to the community’s soccer fields.  This change in the final kilometer will also eliminate the highly technical, 90-degree right hand turn along the course, allowing competitors to concentrate more on the clock and less on course conditions.

“We feel this change in the Individual Time Trial will not only benefit the pro cyclists, but the spectators as well.  The course is already demanding from a technical aspect and the final kilometer has just been straightened out.  For spectators, there is a larger viewing area and more room for amenities, such as parking, hospitality and the awards stage”, stated Chris Aronhalt, Executive Director and Managing Partner with Medalist Sports.

The national title for professional cyclists in the individual time trial discipline is the first of two events on Labor Day weekend for the Greenville Hospital System USA Cycling Professional Championships.  The Cliffs Communities, with seven private master-planned residential communities located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North and South Carolina, hosts the event for the second consecutive year. The individual time trial is a race against the clock rather than a mass start of all competitors.  Over 50 competitors are expected on September 1, including defending champion David Zabriskie (Team CSC), runner-up Chris Baldwin (Toyota-United), and rising-star Saul Raisin (Credit Agricole).  It should take each rider, departing the start house in one-minute intervals, 35-45 minutes to complete the course.

Like last year, admission to the event is free for all spectators along the route. Reserved viewing areas and covered seating are available with VIP Hospitality Tickets, starting at $100 per ticket.

The USA Cycling Professional Individual Time Trial Championship presented by The Cliffs is part of the Greenville Hospital System USA Cycling Professional Championships and a schedule of Labor Day weekend activities. Saturday night following the Time Trial, a special public concert will be held in downtown Greenville.  Sunday features a fundraiser bicycle ride for recreational cyclists, the “Stars and Stripes Challenge”, and the Road Race Championship for professional cyclists. Last year the USA Cycling Professional Championships attracted over 62,000 spectators and raised $82,000 for charity.  Professional cyclists are permitted to compete in both the Time Trial and the Road Race, but must be American-only riders (U.S. citizens, open to members of UCI-registered trade teams only).

The Cliffs includes seven premier, private master-planned residential communities located along the leading edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, between Asheville, North Carolina, and Greenville, South Carolina, collectively bordered by hundreds of thousands of acres of national forests and state parks. The start line is expected to return to The Cliffs at Mountain Park, which spans over 5,000 acres and is expected to include up to 1,000 acres of green space and trails for walking, hiking and outdoor fitness. The Cliffs Valley, which hosts the finish line, is nestled within an amphitheater of mountain ridgelines with a parkland-style golf course designed by Ben Wright and 360-degree views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
