| 4 WAYS OF HANDLING NEGATIVE EMOTIONS |
Emotions affect us in many different ways – some good and many not so good. Medical science has known for many centuries that our emotions can manifest into a myriad of physical and psychological ailments. Here are 4 ways of dealing with negative emotions:
- Suppress: This is the most common and most harmful way of handling feelings. Suppressing causes a build-up of repressed energy (stress), which takes their toll on your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health.
- Escape: You watch too much TV, smoke, overeat or drink, etc., anything to distract you from that unsettling feeling or emotion. But it doesn‘t go away. It‘s still there. It just goes underground, taking its toll on you even though you‘re not aware of it.
- Express: Expressing puts the emotion into action and can give you a short-term sense of relief. However, it does not eliminate the feeling but simply relieves the pressure for a short time. Examples of “expressing” are getting angry and hitting someone or something, going for a workout or yelling and losing control.
- Release: Releasing the emotion allows you to let go of the feeling itself. It is the healthiest and best way to handle an undesirable a negative emotion. When you surrender an emotion, you eliminate negative energy. As time goes by, you become naturally free and calm, with greater clarity of mind. Purpose and direction become more positive and constructive, resulting in better decision-making and higher productivity. Here are some natural ways of letting go or releasing: laughter, sharing with a friend, talking to a counselor or other professional, journaling, meditation, prayer, and the ultimate is total and complete surrender to God.
