More than 14 million Americans experience depression in any given year. Despite these statistics, depression is not a normal part of life, regardless of your age, sex, or health status. If you experience depression for more than two weeks, see a doctor. If you are feeling a little “down,” here are some simple things you can do to raise your mood:
- Go for a leisurely walk
- Read a book or listen to an inspirational self help tape or CD
- Take a bath
- Call a friend
- Eat a fiber-rich grain food (i.e. oatmeal, whole wheat bread, wild rice, etc.)
- Eat a vegetable salad with cold water fish (i.e. Salmon)
- Pray and/or meditate
- Play with your pet
- Play a game (chess, checkers, cards, etc.)
- Go out to a movie or dinner
- Practice deep diaphragmatic breathing
- Do stretching or Yoga
- Listen to your favorite music
- Sing a song
- Go dancing
- Participate in mild to moderate exercise (aerobic or resistance)
- Go for a hike or bike ride
- Make love to your mate
- Write about life events, your feelings or what you're thankful for in a journal
- Attend religious services
