| EIGHT NUTRITION TIPS TO PREVENT OR MINIMIZE THE FLU |
- Stay away from sugar and “junk food.” Nearly half of all candy and sweets are consumed between Halloween and February, which coincides with peak “flu season.” Consumption of refined sugars is one of the biggest culprits in impairing your immune system.
- Avoid eating two to three hours before your regular bedtime. When you go to sleep on an empty stomach your pituitary gland produces more human growth hormone, which enhances your immune system.
- Consume water with juice from a lemon or lime everyday. Lemon and lime juice have very high levels of anti-viral and anti-bacterial agents, which helps you fight the viruses that cause the cold and flu.
- Cut caffeine. Anything that disrupts your sleep reduces your immune system, and caffeine negatively affects the depth and quality of your sleep even if you consume the caffeine in the morning.
- Take a quality multi-vitamin and mineral supplement everyday. Vitamin and mineral supplements are essential to good health, but don’t over do it. It has not been proven that overdosing on vitamins and minerals help prevent the flu.
- Drink lots of water. Consuming at least 10 glasses of water a day strengthens your immune system.
- Drink black or green tea regularly. There are healthy phytonutrients found in these herbal teas that greatly enhance your immune system.
- Take Echinacea. This herbal remedy has been shown to strengthen your immune system, but if you take this supplement continuously for longer than four to six weeks, you can actually suppress your immune system.
