12 WELLNESS TIPS TO PREVENT OR MINIMIZE THE FLU

  1. Establish a regular exercise habit.  Moderate daily physical activity will keep your immune system strong.
  2. Do deep breathing.  Diaphragmatic deep breathing for at least 10 minutes twice a day can boost your T-cells and strengthen your immune system 20 to 30%.  Your lymphocytes (germ fighters) are also increased by regular deep diaphragmatic breathing.
  3. Laugh a lot.  This is one of the best ways to bolster your immune system and minimize negative stress.
  4. Use prayer and meditation.  Medical studies have proven the power of prayer in the healing process.
  5. Attend regular religious services.  According to author and medical researcher, Dr. Herbert Benson, people who attend religious services on a regular basis have less colds and flu.
  6. Wash your hands regularly with alcohol-based soap.  Research shows that use of “dry soaps” can cut your chances of contracting the flu and cold.  Make sure you wash your hands after all contact with other people.
  7. Get plenty of sleep.  Research shows that if you miss one hour of sleep on any given night, your immune system diminishes by 30%.
  8. Get at least one hour of exposure to sunlight on a daily basis during the winter months.  Exposure to natural light strengthens your immune system by raising brain serotonin levels, which are usually the lowest during the winter months.
  9. Get plenty of outdoor exposure.  Outdoor air is loaded with negative ions as opposed to indoor air, which has more positive ions.  Exposure to negative ions tends to elevate T-cells and strengthen your immune system.
  10. Develop social relationships.  The more substantial and more meaningful your social relationships are, the stronger your immune system becomes.
  11. Listen to soothing music.  The sound of relaxing music will help strengthen your immune system by reducing the stress hormone cortisol.
  12. Learn to forgive.  Forgiving others who have wronged you and forgiving yourself are some of the best ways to let go of harmful “immune suppressing energy.”  Forgiving mean “giving forth” the negative emotions that can actually make us sick.
