A study by the Western Human Nutrition Center found that women who diet alone lose less weight, are more stressed, and do worse on simple tests of mental agility. Whereas, women who attend weight-loss support groups have the same low levels of stress as women who aren’t dieting at all.
On the other hand, solo dieters are much more stressed, especially in the first 2 weeks of their diet. And on mental tests, they did as poorly as people who were clinically depressed, or had anxiety disorders. Why is dieting in a group less stressful? Because of the supportive nature of groups, and the nutritional guidance and counseling provided. But you don’t have to join an organized group to be a successful dieter. The support of your family and friends can help you lose weight successfully. The bottom line is, if you want to lose weight, and still be able to use your brain while you’re at it - get as much support as possible.
