Hiking Trail Descriptions

Nature Center Loop Trail (Moderate – 0.37 miles)—This moderate trail is less than a half-mile and is located at The Nature Center at the old DuBose Family home. It features the restored Dehlia DuBose Garden, with its twisting labyrinth and wide variety of indigenous plants. The Nature Center Loop Trail connects with Avery’s Creek Trail at the Bunker/Practice Range picnic area, which was originally a shooting range during WWII. The trail also provides access to the Fishing Pond picnic area and loops back to the Nature Center at the Fishing Pond Dam.

Avery’s Creek Trail (Easy – 1.76 miles) —At 1.76 miles, this easy hike has various access points: from Misty Valley Parkway; The Nature Center, via the Nature Center Loop Trail; and The Wellness Center. The trail follows Avery’s Creek through the Walnut Cove development. It passes along the Upper and Lower Falls, and accesses the Waterfall Wildflower Garden, the Powerhouse, the Fishing Pond, Bunker/Practice Range and the Lower Falls picnic areas. The Swimming Hole, near the Misty Valley Parkway, was once the site for “Creekans” (people who lived near the Creek) baptisms. It’s also where the DuBose children learned to swim.

Powder Creek Trail (Easy – 1.0 mile) —A nice, easy 1-mile trail that has various access points including Avery’s Creek Trail and Running Creek Road. This trail is perfect for a family nature walk and follows Powder Creek through the Millstream Community, connecting with the Cove
Park Trail and The Wellness Center.

Spring Head Trail (Moderate/Strenuous – 1.0 mile) —Pack a light picnic lunch for this moderate-to-strenuous hike. The trail is accessed from Powder Creek Road and culminates at the Old Spring Head, which provided the water supply to the DuBose family until 2004. This trail can also be easily accessed
as a route to The Nature Center and Wellness Center.

Cove Park Trail (Easy – 1.-0 mile) —A short, easy hike that’s perfect for beginners or anyone seeking a leisurely stroll. The trail provides access to The Wellness Center for The Cove Park Community. It also serves as a connector to the Powder Creek Trail and Avery’s Creek Trail.

Wildflower Trail (Easy – 1.28 miles) —This easy, 1.28-mile trail takes its name from the “Wildflower Fields” common area that is convenient to all Walnut Cove residents. The Walnut Valley Parkway provides quick access to this trail.
